Individualized college essay mentorship built on real writing instruction.

 Philosophy

We do not run an essay factory.

Most college essay services rely on templates that make students sound the same. It may be efficient, but it flattens voice, and admissions readers can tell.

At 3rd Coast Narratives, we begin with something real: a memory, a moment, an image that stays with the student. Then we build the essay from there through close reading, drafting, and revision shaped by more than a decade of teaching writing.

The goal is simple: an essay that sounds like the student who wrote it because they did.

Credentials

3rd Coast Narratives was founded by Jacob Lozano, a Houston writing teacher, mentor, and storyteller who has taught writing since 2013. With a background in English Writing & Rhetoric from St. Edward’s University and an MFA in Screenwriting from Boston University, he brings both a teacher’s rigor and a writer’s instinct for structure, voice, and story to the personal statement.

Jacob has mentored more than one hundred students who have earned admission to selective universities and major scholarships, including Rice, Vanderbilt, UT Austin, Texas A&M, and NYU.

The Mentorship Process

A strong personal statement is not written in one sitting. It is built through reflection, conversation, drafting, and careful revision. Over several weeks, students move from story discovery to a first draft, through multiple rounds of revision, and finally to an essay that sounds like them - only refined.

This mentorship is for students who want to do real work and write something honest. There are no templates, no ghostwriting shortcuts, and no canned formulas. This is a writing mentorship.

I work with a limited number of students each season to keep the process personal and rigorous.

Testimonials

Students who complete the mentorship leave with more than a personal statement. They leave with a clearer sense of their own story.

"He goes far beyond teaching you how to put words together, but rather how to put yourself into words.”
